I think I might actually be a grumpy old man hidden inside a young woman’s body. I mean…I love to have fun and socialize but when I hear music that is so loud that I can’t hear the person beside me, I get really angry. Like “WHY DO PEOPLE THINK WE ARE IN A DISCOTHEQUE?!?” angry.
Yes, I said discotheque (I honestly think I was born a few decades too late for my soul). I like the kind of fun that doesn’t involve me screaming at the person I’m trying to have a conversation with or straining to hear their responses.
I enjoy having a chilled out night, where I can relax and enjoy the company of the people I’m with. Luckily, my husband and I are both kind of in the same boat. We both love to enjoy fun things to do that allow us to spend time together and explore different and new activities.
Here’s a list of things you can do if you want to try something new:
1. Escape Rooms – these are hands down 1 of our favorite things to do. You normally have an hour or so to solve the mystery (there are always different themes) and if you get all the answers right within your time limit, you win!
2. Comedy Club – there are always new lineups of local talent as well as famous comedians who come to perform at most comedy clubs so check out who is playing close to you.
3. Mini Golf – always a fun thing to do; it gets you out and moving around plus it’s a classic date night choice so you’ll see lots of other couples doing the same thing; which also adds a vibe of romance.
4. Bowling – such a great date night activity! you can also invite some other couple friends and get a little social too.
5. Batting Cages – I don’t have a batting cage near me but I’m dying to go. Gets you physical (which is a huge bonus if you have a job where you’re hardly moving around all day) AND it can appeal to the competitiveness in all of us which can also ramp up the romance factor. WIN/WIN.
6. Painting Class – a great way to let the inner artist out and enjoy some soothing art. Plus, depending on where you go there are structured classes where they give you direction or there are classes that are more free and allow you to paint whatever you want. Hint: if you’re not too creative and can only draw a house with clouds and 1 tree (like me), try the structured classes!
7. Cooking Class – really any type of class is a fun one. A lot of community colleges will have 2-3 hour classes on cooking one specific cuisine so it’s not like you have to sign up for a weekly thing. It can be something fun that you try together. It might help him to understand the pressure we go through in the kitchen every time we cook!
8. Professional Sports Game – I LOVE hockey. I’m Canadian so it’s kind of in my blood but it’s definitely more fun and interactive to be at the game than to watch it on the TV. You can also watch a baseball or football game or any other sport that you enjoy.
9. Go to a Play or the Ballet – It’s nice to dress up and get all fancy once in a while. We get so used to seeing each other in our sweats that sometimes we forget what we look like cleaned up. It’s nice to have a reason to get all dolled up!
10. Hookah Night – it’s a fun place to hang out and socialize. Depending on where you go, you can enjoy a chilled out vibe and have some dessert and some flavored tobacco.
11. Laser Tag – SUIT UP; this is going to be a LEGEN (wait for it) DARY night!!! Embody Barney Stinson as best as you can and get out there and BE AWESOME.
For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, you are seriously missing out in your life. Go and watch all 9 seasons of How I Met your Mother IMMEDIATELY. Bonus: Make a few date nights out of it!
12. Museum or Aquarium – more of a daytime thing but if you love history or marine life, these are great places to see where you can also increase your knowledge. Make a whole day of it and grab a nice dinner after!
13. Board games – If you don’t really feel like going out, you’re still doing something different and challenging each other also leads to testing the boundaries of your brains. You can even take them with you to some settings and have a 2-in-1 date night.
14. Act like a tourist – I’m definitely guilty of not knowing what’s around in my own town! I always hear about fun things that people are doing near me but I don’t normally take the time to explore the city. We are always so busy working that we forget to learn what’s special about our own area. Search for the tourist attractions near you and spend a day getting to know your surroundings.
15. Browse an Antique Store – it’s so cool to see things from your childhood or even from a few decades back. It’s a total blast from the past that reminds you of the good old days!
16. River Cruise – if there is a river around you, take a romantic boat cruise. There are normally a few different times to get out on the water so you can choose which one suits you best. The sunset cruise is a really romantic one if the weather is right!
17. Spend a night in the city – I know. You already live there. What’s the point of spending money to stay in a hotel room when you can just go home? Sometimes the change of scenery can do wonders for you guys, especially if you’re feeling overtired or more like roommates then a married couple. It’s nice to have someone clean up after you and cook for you so you can enjoy some alone time together!
18. High Tea – if you can, find a nice hotel nearby that offers high tea. It’s so different from what you normally do that it will feel like you’re on the titanic or playing dress up! We went for a high tea in the city and pretended that we were brunching with the Queen. Pinky fingers up everyone!
19. Scenic Drive – spend some time driving along the coast or in the city…anywhere that’s really pretty to look at. It’s a nice background to get back to basics and have a peaceful conversation
20. Take a Road Trip – find a close-by city or town that is only a couple hours away and make a fun road trip out of it. It will be nice to get out of the same day to day routine plus you can explore new areas together!
21. Search “what’s happening near me” – always a handy last minute tool if you have nothing planned and no ideas for what to do on a whim!
