So we work a million hours a week. Then we come home, try to throw something together for dinner and do the dishes (or not) and then we sit on the couch and fall asleep right after (or during) dinner.
Sound familiar?
I’m currently going through this “I have literally no time to do anything but eat, sleep and work” phase. For those of you who know me, you know that I run a retail business and we are open from 9am until 7:30pm. So I normally don’t get home until 8:30pm and by then, I’m exhausted and I have literally 45mins to cook and feed my husband before he leaves for work and I fall flat on my face.
It’s killer. I’m EXHAUSTED. I usually wake up about an hour after falling asleep in front of the TV and drag myself up to bed with my eyes half closed and pray for a good night’s sleep – or whatever’s left of it without having to wake up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Then I do it all over again for 6 days every SINGLE week.
On my ONLY day off (SUNDAY FUNDAY), I want to have an actual day off. But there’s always so much work to do around the house that I normally have to force myself to get up and do some chores. I try to clean up the house a little bit so I can feel like I actually did something productive. I usually spend 1-2 hours doing a general tidy up.

One glorious Sunday I was feeling particularly exhausted but trying to be healthy, so I decided to make myself a fruit plate. To my absolute horror, I dropped a grape in that weird space between my counter and my refrigerator. I seriously considered leaving it there because I was too tired to move. Then I figured it would get all gross and smelly and germy and so I would have to muster up the strength to move the fridge and get it out.
So obviously, I screamed “SSSPPPIIIDDDDEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRR” as loud as I could until my husband came to help. When we moved the fridge, what we saw was gross. Now I’m not going to go into detail but I will be honest and say that I had TOTALLY forgotten about cleaning things that we don’t interact with every day. I mean, I’ve seen my mom doing it LIT-ER-ALLY[1] every weekend growing up but when it was my turn to take care of my own house, I totally dropped the ball.
In an effort to remind myself to clean up all the things that should be tackled, I’ve made a list of regular house chores and deep cleaning that should be reviewed regularly. I know it’s not always fun, so you can even get your partner involved to make it go faster. Who am I kidding? Grab some gloves and put on a fun playlist – you’ll be there for a while!
PS – if you’re anything like Monica from FRIENDS, this would be heaven for you. If you DON’T love to clean up but you’re still super competitive like she is (hi twin), then a great way to get through it quicker is to divvy up the task list with someone and COMPETE with them to see who finishes first! If you can’t find a willing competitor, then compete against yourself. After all, you are the best competition you’ll ever find! In any case, it definitely makes it a bit more fun to get through it all.
